Strawberry Basil Lemonade Mocktail (Non-Alcoholic, 10 Minutes)

Strawberry and basil is one of those flavour combinations that sounds like it was invented at a fancy restaurant and turns out to be something you can make in your kitchen in ten minutes on a Tuesday.

The basil is the thing that elevates this from a standard strawberry lemonade to something you would actually pause to think about while drinking. It adds an herby, slightly peppery depth that stops the strawberry from being sweet and one-dimensional. The result is bright and complex and refreshing in a way that regular lemonade simply is not.

This strawberry basil lemonade mocktail is completely alcohol-free. No gin, no vodka, nothing missing — it is complete exactly as it is. It works as a spring brunch drink, a party mocktail, a garden party option, or simply a Tuesday afternoon when you want something beautiful to sip while you sit outside.

What You Need

Serves 2 · Time: 10 minutes

  • 200g (1 cup) fresh strawberries, hulled and halved
  • 8 fresh basil leaves, plus extra sprigs to garnish
  • 60ml (2 oz) fresh lemon juice (about 2 large lemons)
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup or honey
  • 300ml (10 oz) sparkling water
  • Ice

Need a cocktail shaker to muddle properly? (Find a beautiful one on Amazon →). Or use the bottom of a sturdy jar — it works just as well.

How to Make It

  1. In the bottom of a cocktail shaker or a sturdy jar, combine the strawberry halves and basil leaves. Muddle firmly with a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon — press and twist rather than just smashing — until the strawberries release their juice and the basil smells strongly fragrant. It should take about 30 seconds.
  2. Add the lemon juice and simple syrup. Fill with ice and shake hard for 10-15 seconds.
  3. Double-strain into two glasses filled with fresh ice — pour through the strainer and hold a second fine mesh sieve underneath to catch any small basil pieces and strawberry seeds. This gives you that clean, beautiful colour.
  4. Top each glass with sparkling water and stir once gently.
  5. Garnish with a fresh basil leaf laid flat on top of the drink and a strawberry sliced halfway up and placed on the rim.

3 Ways to Vary This Recipe

Make it a punch — multiply everything by 6, muddle the strawberries and basil in a large jug, strain, and pour into a punch bowl with lots of ice. Top with a full bottle of sparkling water just before guests arrive. This makes approximately 1.5 litres and serves 8-10. (Find a beautiful punch bowl on Amazon →)

Make it a strawberry basil agua fresca — replace the sparkling water with still cold water and add a tiny extra drizzle of honey. The result is lighter, more hydrating, less cocktail-like — and completely stunning served in a big glass jug for a summer table. This version is also naturally beautiful without a drop of ice: the colours hold.

Make it a frozen slushy — blend the strained strawberry-basil base with a full cup of ice until smooth. Pour into a short glass and top with a small splash of sparkling water. A frozen strawberry basil lemonade for hot days.

What Glass to Use

A short wide tumbler shows off the vivid coral-pink colour of this mocktail at its best. The coral-red of the muddled strawberry against clear ice through clear glass is genuinely one of the most beautiful things in a spring mocktail collection.

Alternatively, serve it in a tall slim highball if you are making it more sparkling and less punchy — the height makes the bubbles look more dramatic.

For a party setting, serve in short wide glasses so guests can see the colour and garnish clearly from across the table. That strawberry on the rim does its job best when it can be seen.

What to Serve It With

The strawberry-basil combination makes this mocktail a natural companion for:

  • Bruschetta with fresh tomato and basil
  • A classic caprese salad
  • Strawberry shortcake or galette
  • A charcuterie board with prosciutto and melon
  • Anything lemony: lemon cake, lemon bars, lemon pasta

It is also simply excellent on its own, on a warm April afternoon, with no particular reason.

The Ritual Tip

Make the strawberry-basil base (steps 1 and 2, before the sparkling water) in a larger quantity and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days. When you want a drink, pour over ice and top with sparkling water. Freshly mixed every time, effortlessly.
